I, the humble and great Lord and Sovereign, the most holy Philaret, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia, granted Father Xenophon the blessing and ordered the cutting of timber for the construction of a new church in the name of the Most Pure Mother of God and her glorious Dormition. The church was to be erected in a new location in Arkhangelsk, on the Zhabinsky embankment, below the trading courtyard. This was recorded in Moscow on March 17, 7134, as stated in the charter for the foundation of the church. According to chronicles, in 1694, Peter I visited the Dormition Church and attended the all-night vigil on the eve of the feast of the holy apostles Peter and Paul.

The church's popularity among the residents of Arkhangelsk is confirmed by the fact that on October 13, 1742, parishioners appealed to Archbishop Varsonofy with a request to bless the construction of a new stone Dormition church. They had already prepared all the necessary materials. A few years later, a new stone church with two chapels and a bell tower was built on the site of the dismantled wooden church.

In the late 19th century, the church was thoroughly renovated, and a significant portion of the funds for the repairs was allocated by Father John of Kronstadt. However, soon the 32-meter bell tower began to settle, and it was nicknamed the 'leaning' tower. When the tilt reached almost two meters, it was decided to demolish it. The parishioners opposed this and engaged local engineers to strengthen the foundation. For a long time, specialists tried to determine the cause of the tilt until P.P. Pokryshkin, a member of the Imperial Archaeological Commission, took over the matter. According to his project, the bell tower was completely straightened in 1912.

After that, for three years, restoration of the interior decoration was carried out, but after the Bolshevik coup, the parish was closed, church valuables were confiscated, and the church gradually fell into disrepair.

In 1998, a chapel in honor of St. Anthony of Siya was built on the site of the Dormition Church, and a cross was erected. In 2008, the construction of a new church with a restored historical appearance was completed. On the eve of the Great Consecration, the main shrine, the miraculous icon of the Dormition of the Mother of God, which adorned the walls of the old Dormition Church for several centuries, was solemnly transferred here. The residents of Arkhangelsk managed to preserve it during the years of persecution against the Church.
