St. Demetrius of Thessalonica Church in Ryabushki

The village of Ryabushki, also known as Ryabushinskaya Sloboda, is located along the banks of the Protva and Isterma rivers. Until 1764, it was owned by the Holy Pafnutiev Borovsky Monastery.

It is known that a church already existed in the village in the 17th century. It stood at the highest point of the area, on a steep bank of the Protva River. Over time, the old church fell into disrepair, and in 1804, parishioners and benefactors built a small columnless stone church in its place. Above the low main volume of the building rises a rotunda of the second tier, giving the structure a monumental appearance. The rotunda has window openings on three sides, allowing light to freely enter. The dome of the rotunda is adorned with an ancient blind cupola. The church has three altars: the central one is dedicated to St. Demetrius of Thessalonica, the northern to St. Nicholas, and the southern to St. George the Victorious.

The church's iconostasis is made in dark blue with gilded elements, topped with an attic and crowned with a wooden carved crucifix. It likely contains icons from the old church. On both sides of the Royal Doors are images of the Savior Not Made by Hands and the Mother of God “Odigitria.” The church also houses wooden sculptures, presumably from the early 19th century: figures of the Mother of God and Mary Magdalene before Golgotha in the refectory and a sculpture of “Christ in Prison” in a niche behind glass. The main shrine of the church is the miraculous icon of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica, painted on a wooden panel and covered with gold leaf. The icons of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” and “Three-Handed” are also particularly venerated, as well as the Crucifixion with the attending figures.

Next to the church are two holy springs: St. Demetrius of Thessalonica, located at the foot of the mountain, and St. Nicholas, situated 400-500 meters from the church along the Protva River. Every year on the Feast of the Epiphany, a Cross Procession is held to them with the Great Blessing of Water.

In the 20th century, the church remained active.
