Almost immediately after the founding of the village of Dorogoshch in 1656, the first wooden church was built in honor of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica.

According to documents from 1780, there was already a wooden church of St. Demetrius in Dorogoshch, but the exact date of its construction is unknown. In 1853, a new wooden Demetrius church was built, which has not survived to this day.

From 1903 to 1910, a new stone church was built with the funds of the local landowner Surin, which is still in operation today.

In 1908, the village had 1,756 Orthodox residents, a zemstvo school, and a parish school in the village of Sankovka. In the 1980s, a major renovation was carried out in the church.

The church holds significant artistic value due to the decorative design of its facades. It has undergone restoration of the interior and the bell tower, which has a destroyed top. The bell tower consists of one tier and is topped with three small domes. The roof of the church part is gabled, the apse has two tiers and a semicircular finish, with two small porches located to the south and north. The facade is richly decorated with horizontal belts featuring single and paired arched windows, adorned with kokoshniks. The main entrance is also decorated with a kokoshnik with a drop and framed by two half-columns. The side entrances on the northern and southern sides have large porches. The second tier of the building is also beautifully decorated. The wall paintings and all interior furnishings were created by Kyiv masters.
