During the Great Patriotic War, the old brick Mikhailovsky church was completely destroyed. On July 15, 2007, Archbishop John of Belgorod and Stary Oskol consecrated the cornerstone for the new church, the construction of which is still ongoing.

In the 18th century, there was a wooden church in the village of Kotovo, but information about it has not survived. The brick church in honor of Archangel Michael was built in 1876 by a master from Shchigry, Alexey Tikhonovich Kochenov, together with the parishioners.

The one-story church in the center of the village had the shape of an elongated ship: 37.5 m long, 18 m wide, and 37.5 m high. The walls were made of fired brick, with iron ties. The smooth walls were decorated with cornices, the roof was arched and covered with iron. On the vaults was a lantern with one dome covered in white iron, and the cross was copper, four-pointed, and gilded. The windows were elongated with iron grilles. The church had three doors covered with sheet iron and a porch on three sides.

Inside, the church was a square chamber, the altar was separated by an iconostasis, and the pointed arches rested on the walls. The altar and the sacrificial table were wooden and simple, as was the three-tiered iconostasis with carved gilded columns. The royal gates were undecorated, and the solea rose on three steps, separated by a wooden lattice.

The bell tower consisted of two tiers and was built together with the church. It housed four bells: one cast in 1874, the others in 1832. There was a wooden lodge at the church, erected in 1880.

The rector of the Kotovo church was Father Mikhail Sotnikov. In 1930, Bishop Martyr Onufriy ordained Vasily Nikolayevich Emelyanov to the diaconate for the church in the village of Kotovo. During the Great Patriotic War, the church was destroyed.

On July 15, 2007, Archbishop John of Belgorod and Stary Oskol consecrated the cornerstone at the site of the new construction. While the church is being built, services are temporarily held in a separate room.
