The St. Nicholas Church in the village of Nizhnie Peny was built in 1867 and underwent restoration from 2011 to 2013 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the canonization of St. Joasaph, the Bishop of Belgorod and Wonderworker.

In the 1930s, the Nicholas Church in the village of Nizhnie Peny suffered partial destruction: the dome and bell tower were damaged. For a long time, the building was used as a grain storage facility and later converted into a rural House of Culture.

Since August 2001, the Orthodox parish of St. Nicholas has been operating in the village of Nizhnie Peny.

On August 3, 2013, Metropolitan John of Belgorod and Stary Oskol, along with Bishop Sophronius of Gubkin and Grayvoron, conducted the consecration of the restored St. Nicholas Church in the village of Nizhnie Peny in the Rakityansky District and served the Divine Liturgy there.

The church houses a relic of the Hoziev martyrs, who labored in the monastery of St. Savva and were killed by Saracens in the 8th century. This relic was brought from Jerusalem.
