In March 2001, artists living on Verkhnyaya Maslovka in the Artists' Town, at the initiative of People's Artist of Russia A.P. Gorsky, appealed to Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II for a blessing to build a temple in honor of St. Andrei Rublev on a plot of land near their homes.

In 2002, the blessing was received, and in 2003, Archpriest Dmitry Smirnov held a prayer service at the chosen site, where a commemorative stone was also installed, symbolizing the intention to build a temple in honor of the famous icon painter.

At that time, the area was mainly built up with wooden houses, which were gradually being replaced by stone high-rises. The house that stood on the future temple site was demolished, and the vacant lot, overgrown with weeds and American maples, was included in the Natural Complex of Moscow from 1989 to 1995 and became a protected area, prohibited for construction. The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection did not grant permission for construction.

In 2010, a meeting of local residents was held with the participation of priests, representatives of the North Administrative Okrug, the Airport District Administration, and journalists. An appeal was prepared to the authorities requesting permission for construction, which was signed by 3,000 people. A representative of the Prefecture announced that the Government of Moscow had allowed the construction of temples within Natural Complexes. In March 2011, it was possible to convince the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection that the site had no ecological value and was suitable for the construction of the temple.

The main obstacle was overcome. From 2012 to 2014, the necessary work was carried out to prepare documents for obtaining a construction permit.

During this time, the architectural project of the temple and project documentation were being developed in the workshop of architect O.A. Barannikova.

In 2015, the project was approved by LLC 'Mosexpert', all necessary documents were prepared, and permission was obtained from the State Construction Supervision.

The issue of financing remained. Construction under the '200 temples' program is carried out exclusively on charitable donations. Future parishioners had to raise funds. An Art Fund was created from paintings donated by artists for sale in favor of the temple. Organizations and individuals donated money, but it was not enough. Ultimately, it was decided to build a temporary wooden temple.

Construction began in January 2016. On July 17, 2016, on the feast day of St. Andrei Rublev, the first Divine Liturgy was held in the basement of the temple.
