The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God 'Sign' in Znamensk

Znamensk was located 45 versts northwest of the diocesan city and 30 versts southwest of the district town, in a marshy area on the Nugry River. The parish included not only the village itself but also four villages: Gorodishche, Mikhailovka, Pavlovsky Khutor, and Razbegaevka, as well as the village of Georgievskoe. There were two schools in the village: a zemstvo school and a literacy school. Before the revolution, the parish had a priest, a deacon, and a psalmist. No information has survived about the time of the parish's foundation.

It can be confidently stated that in the first half of the 18th century, the village and the church already existed, as the 1749 records mention the village of Znamensk with a church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God 'Sign', after which the settlement was likely named. According to tradition, more than 200 years ago, there was also a church in the village of Georgievskoe, consecrated in honor of St. George the Victorious. This tradition seems credible, as the parishioners of Znamensk, especially in the village, still maintain the custom of celebrating 'Yegoryev Day', although no actual traces of the church remain, and there is not even a chapel in Georgievskoe.

It is also unknown when and why the church was moved to Znamensk. The current stone church previously had a bell tower, which was added a few years after its construction. The altar of the church is consecrated in the name of St. Theodore Stratilates, but the exact date and author of the construction are unknown. An antimins was kept here, consecrated on June 24, 1804.

During the period of persecution, the church suffered greatly, at different times serving as a stable, a machine and tractor station, and a garage for the electrical repair service.

In 2001, restoration work began. Currently, regular services are held in the church. Instead of a permanent bell tower, a carved belfry has been built. Through the efforts of the parish, a wooden chapel has been erected in the village of Uzkoe on the site of the destroyed church.

On September 24, 2017, Metropolitan Anthony of Oryol and Bolkhov performed the rite of great consecration of the Znamensk church and conducted the Divine Liturgy in the newly consecrated church.
