The Church of the Icon of the Mother of God "Sign" in Northern was opened in 1998 with the blessing of Archbishop Paisius of Oryol and Livny. It is located in a building that was reconstructed into a church. Currently, a new building is being constructed in the same neighborhood of the city between the Metallurgists' Culture Palace and the S.P. Botkin City Hospital. A chapel has already been installed and consecrated at the new site.

The Icon of the Mother of God "Sign" was found on September 8 (21), 1295, in a forest near Kursk, at the root of a tree, which gave it its name. In 1597, the image was transferred to Moscow, where, at the order of Tsar Feodor Ioannovich, a silver-gilded cover was made for it, depicting the Lord of Hosts and Old Testament prophets. This led to a complication of the original iconography, which initially represented only the Most Holy Theotokos with the Infant. In the 17th and 19th centuries, the icon was depicted with figures of the Lord of Hosts and prophets. An example of this updated iconography can be seen on an icon from the late 17th to early 18th century from the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery.
