The chapel is located in a brick two-story building from 1814, which previously housed the children's shelter "Consolation." It occupies the second floor and is distinguished by a dome with a cupola. The shelter was founded at the Nikolai-Chernoostrov Monastery in 1994, and the building was renovated in 2000-2003.

The church is dedicated to the icon of the Mother of God "Consolation" and is a small domestic church, the main shrine of which is this icon. According to legend, in ancient times, there was a custom where priests would leave the temple after morning prayer and hand the keys to the gatekeeper to open the monastery gates. One day, the icon of the Mother of God, located in the outer narthex, came to life and spoke, warning not to open the gates and to drive away the pirates. The infant Jesus, sitting in the arms of the Virgin Mary, tried to stop her, but she pushed his hand away. The monastery was saved. The face of the Virgin Mary expresses great condescension, patience, and forgiveness. Now, every Friday, a divine liturgy is held in the cathedral "Consolation," and a prayer service is conducted daily. The feast day in honor of the icon is celebrated on February 3, and on this day, dozens of pilgrims come to the monastery to pray before the icon for the forgiveness of sins.
