The Russian Orthodox community was founded in Western Australia in 1950 by Father Afanasy (Mogilev), who arrived in the state for pastoral service at the Northam immigrant camp. Soon after, Sergey Putilin established a new parish in Perth. Initially, services were held in a hall at the Anglican church, but on May 25, 1953, the cornerstone ceremony took place. On October 14, 1954, on the feast of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, Bishop Theodor solemnly consecrated the first St. Peter and Paul church in Perth. The consecration was also attended by Father Peter Radosh from the Serbian Orthodox community, who spiritually cared for the parish from 1969 to 1990 and inspired the construction of a new brick church.

The new St. Peter and Paul church was built on the site of the old one in 1990, designed by architect Alexey Somov in the style of traditional Pskov churches of Russia, and was consecrated by Archbishop Pavel on the first Sunday after the feast of All Saints.

Currently, services at the church are conducted by Archpriest Sergey Okunev, who has been the parish rector since June 27, 1997. The church is open mainly on Sundays, during services, and on holidays. Additional Orthodox sacraments are conducted by prior arrangement.
