The "Russia" hotel was a true cultural and entertainment center. Musical performances were regularly held at the hotel, there was a cinema and billiard rooms, as well as a magnificent restaurant. The hotel opened in the summer of 1907. Owner Alexander Yakushev invested significant funds to make his establishment unique. On the second floor, in the right part of the building, was the "Yar" restaurant with a separate concert hall, where live music played daily. Yakushev invited only renowned artists. For example, in 1908, the "Internationale" orchestra conducted by Hans Frank performed here, with Italian violinist Mavro Bizaki as the soloist. The cuisine of the "Yar" restaurant was also top-notch. The menu featured cuts of Cherkassy meat, Angara wild goat, woodcocks, lobsters, roast capercaillie, and much more. Prices remained moderate, and the Penza bohemia often frequented this place. The restaurant was a favorite of Governor Ivan Koshko. Occasionally, masquerade balls were held at the "Yar." In 1909, a charity evening took place here, with proceeds going to help the victims of the Messina earthquake. The "Edison" cinema was also popular, showing the latest foreign films. During the Soviet era, it housed the House of the Peasant.
