Main House of the Urban Estate from the 18th-19th Century

The two-story main house, formed as a result of several construction phases, was located deep within the plot and represented remodeled chambers from the 17th century. In 1790, the estate belonged to the Dashkov noble family. At their request, stone wings were built on both sides of the main house, along the red line of Malyy Tolmachevsky Lane, giving the estate the symmetry characteristic of classicism. A grand courtyard appeared in front of the mansion, and service buildings were constructed on the side of Staromonetny (then Proyezdny) Lane.

After the fire of 1812, only the main house and one stone wing survived, which were restored. The new owners, the Polenov merchants, built a small wooden guardhouse instead of the second wing that had burned down. By 1858, the estate passed to Alexey Stepanovich Protopopov, a first-guild merchant, owner of a candle factory and shops in the Svechny Row of Kitay-Gorod. The remodeled main house remained the center of the estate, whose boundaries expanded due to neighboring plots. It had two floors and a one-story stone annex for the hall and concierge. The semi-basement was used for staff. The eastern part of the property housed a large garden. Until the 1917 revolution, the merchant estate was preserved, and the premises were not rented out.

During the Soviet era, part of the territory was allocated for school construction, and some buildings were destroyed. The main house housed the republican council of the All-Union Voluntary Physical Culture and Sports Society of Trade Unions.

Currently, the house on Malyy Tolmachevsky Lane is a cultural heritage site. The facade of the building has a three-part composition with a central risalit. The second floor of the risalit is adorned with three tall windows with profiled archivolts. The rich decor of the risalit conceals the asymmetry of the facade, which is uncharacteristic of classicism. The windows on the second floor of the side wings are highlighted with lush decorations and frames with profiled sills. The first floor and corner parts of the facade are treated with horizontal rustication. The courtyard side has restored 17th-century frames. Some elements have been preserved in the interiors, such as plaster cornices from the late 19th century. The building houses the tourism and sports house 'Spartak.'
