The Kazan Geological Museum named after A.A. Shtukenberg, one of the oldest in Russia, was founded in 1804 at Kazan Imperial University. Its collection began to form in the 18th century at Kazan Gymnasium. Based on this museum, the Museum of Natural History of Tatarstan was later created.
The museum houses over 150,000 exhibits from around the world, including a beautiful meteorite from North America, Ural malachite, and a skeleton of an ichthyosaur from Germany.
The museum consists of seven halls. The "Hall of Historical Geology" features rocks and fossil organisms from the dawn of Earth: invertebrates, corals, mollusks, as well as skeletons and skulls of reptiles. The "Hall of Minerals" focuses on the geological differences of territories and showcases the diversity of rocks and minerals.
In the "Hall of the Mammoth," you can see skeletons of mammals from the last global ice age, such as the woolly rhinoceros, cave bear, dwarf hippopotamus, and mammoth.
The "Hall of Mineralogy" is rich in a collection of samples from deposits around the world, including meteorites from 40 countries. Among the rare exhibits is British fluorite.
The "Hall of Crystallography" continues the theme, presenting a collection of natural and artificially grown crystals, as well as "pseudomorphs," minerals formed from ancient lizards, birds, snakes, and flowers.
The "Hall of Dynamic Geology" is dedicated to natural processes on the planet that can be studied through rocks. Many samples in the "Hall of Oil" were brought by Professor Shtukenberg himself, a geologist and paleontologist, in honor of whom the museum was named nearly a century after his death.
