The completion of the Gethsemane skete on Valaam marked the creation of a "Russian Jerusalem," comparable in scale only to the New Jerusalem of Patriarch Nikon. Under Father Mauricius, the New Jerusalem Resurrection skete was completed. The mountain on which it is located was named Mount Zion, and the strait behind it, connecting Lake Ladoga and Nikon Lake, was named Kedron. To the north of Gethsemane rises the 30-meter Mount of Olives with a five-domed wooden chapel in Russian style, consecrated in 1912 in honor of the Ascension of the Lord. Behind it, along the seven-kilometer road to the monastery, stretches a field known as the "Valley of Jehoshaphat"; to the right, as in Palestine, is Lechevo Lake, known as the Dead Sea, connected to it by the Jordan River. To the left of the road, on the site of a former brick factory, is the village of Skudelniche. The main estate with the Transfiguration Cathedral is likened to Mount Tabor. The Gethsemane skete is located at the foot of the Mount of Olives. The Most Holy Theotokos was buried in the Palestinian Gethsemane garden, so the skete church is consecrated in her honor. It was built in 1911, with an altar attached to a chapel from 1906. The church is adorned with tents and rich carvings, but the interior decoration, including the cypress iconostasis, has been lost. In the 1930s, Finnish artillerymen were stationed at the skete.

The church was re-consecrated on September 12, 1998, and restoration work began. A carved cypress iconostasis was recreated, and five bells were cast.

Nearby is a wooden chapel with the icon "The Prayer of the Cup," in memory of the Lord's prayer in the Gethsemane garden before the Passion. Behind the church, among the fir trees, are two monastic buildings for the brotherhood, where 8-10 people lived, including Hieromonk Timon Pitkevich, in the schema of Michael, a confessor of the "old style," who passed away in the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery in the early 1920s. A small fir alley leads to the Small Nikon Bay, the calmest on Valaam. Here, in 1910, under the igumen Mauricius, a worship cross made of gray granite with symbols of the Savior's Passion was erected.
