The Tolstoy Foundation, a charitable organization located in Valley Cottage, New York, USA, was founded in 1939 by Alexandra Tolstoy, the youngest daughter of writer Leo Tolstoy. Its goal was to assist Russian emigrants and preserve the best traditions of Russian art, history, and culture. The foundation provided support to refugees, displaced persons, and orphans, as well as funded educational programs. On the foundation's grounds stands the Orthodox Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh.

Alexandra Tolstoy made significant efforts to establish the Leo Tolstoy Foundation, collaborating with the International Red Cross, the U.S. State Department, and the World Council of Churches. The foundation was officially registered in New York State on April 15, 1939. Among its founders and sponsors were Igor Sikorsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Tatiana Shaufus-Rappoport, former Russian ambassador Boris Bakhmetyev, and pilot Boris Sergievsky. Former U.S. President Herbert Hoover became the first honorary chairman of the foundation and held this position until his death in 1964.

In 1941, thanks to a private sponsor, the foundation was able to acquire a 70-acre farm 30 miles north of New York in Valley Cottage. This farm became a resettlement center for over 30,000 refugees and a home for elderly emigrants. Alexandra Tolstoy, along with her assistants, developed the farm on limited resources.

After the war, the foundation continued to support displaced persons in Germany, helping them emigrate to the U.S., and funded Russian-speaking emigrant organizations such as TSOPÉ.
