68 years ago, in the Hanseatic city of Bremen, the decision was made to establish the Princess Kira of Prussia Foundation. Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (1907-1994) and his wife, Grand Duchess Kira Kirillovna, Princess of Prussia (1909-1967), aimed to create a foundation that would allow children and youth to vacation at Hohenzollern Castle.

For this purpose, a floor with renovated rooms was allocated in the castle. This tradition continues today, including an annual concert in the Count's Hall of the castle, which is aimed at children from socially disadvantaged families. To date, more than 14,000 children and young people have had the opportunity for free vacations at the castle.

Since 2012, the foundation has been led by Her Royal Highness Princess Sophie of Prussia, the wife of the Head of the Prussian Royal House, His Royal Highness Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia.

Grand Duchess Kira Kirillovna was recognized as part of the Russian Imperial House by decree of Nicholas II with the title of Princess of Imperial Blood, without limitation of rights, including succession to the throne. Nicholas II was her godfather. In 1924, when her father, Grand Duke Cyril, proclaimed himself Emperor Cyril I, she received the title of Grand Duchess.

In 1938, in Potsdam, the wedding of Kira Kirillovna and Louis Ferdinand, Prince of Germany and Prussia, took place. The ceremony was attended by her father, Cyril Vladimirovich, and Louis Ferdinand's grandfather, the former Emperor of Germany Wilhelm II.

Today, their grandson, Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia (born 1976), son of Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (Junior) (1944-1977) and Countess Donata Castel-Rüdenhausen (1950-2015), heads the German Imperial and Prussian Royal House.
