Faculty Clinic

In the 1880s, thanks to the initiative of Professor N.V. Sklifosovsky, the construction of the Clinical Town of Moscow University began at Devichye Pole. One of the key buildings of this complex was the Faculty Clinic, the construction of which was funded by the state. The laying of the building took place on September 22, 1887, and the opening was in 1890.

Previously, the clinic was located on Rozhdestvenka and included therapeutic and surgical departments. The building project was developed by architect K.M. Bykovsky. The clinic buildings, located on Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street, form a unified ensemble with the Hospital Clinic, which is nearby. The facades of both clinics are almost identical and symmetrical, however, the layout of the Faculty Clinic is simpler. Here, junior students were trained, unlike in the Hospital Clinic.

The architecture of the buildings resembles Moscow estates of the 18th century. The main entrance, designed as a portico with columns, is located in the single-story part of the building, set back from the red line. In 1897, a monument to N.I. Pirogov, created by V.O. Sherwood, was installed in the courtyard in front of the entrance.

The main parts of the clinic consist of two- and three-story side buildings, located parallel to Bolshaya Pirogovskaya Street and separated from it by flower beds. The facades, like most buildings in the complex, are executed in the style of the Italian Renaissance with the use of horizontal rustication and cornices. The window frames vary on each floor.

Graduates of the School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture S.I. Solovyov and I.M. Mashkov actively participated in the development of the drawings. The interior spaces were carefully thought out, allowing the building to be used for its intended purpose even today. An important part was the system for isolating different categories of visitors: patients, students, infectious patients, and service personnel.

Currently, the building houses the R.M. Fronshtein Urology Clinic and the Department of Foreign Languages.
