The small German town of Baden-Baden continues to attract Russian tourists, remaining an interesting place to visit. Special attention is drawn to the story associated with the great Russian writer Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky and the German casino at the Kurhaus. In 1867, Dostoevsky spent five weeks there trying to win at roulette.

In June 1867, on his way to Switzerland, Fyodor Mikhailovich suggested to his wife Anna Grigorievna to stop in Baden-Baden for two weeks. He spoke so persuasively about the possibility of winning at the casino, providing numerous examples and arguments, that Anna agreed. However, his gaming strategy did not bring success.

Anna Dostoevskaya recalled that Fyodor Mikhailovich's reasoning about winning was quite logical and could have worked if applied by someone more composed, like an Englishman or a German. But Dostoevsky was too emotional and prone to extremes. Every day he went to the casino with hopes of winning but returned empty-handed. The game drove him to exhaustion and fits. "The worst part is that I always went to extremes, crossing the line," he wrote. In the end, not only was the money for returning to Russia lost, but also watches, wedding rings, and his wife's dress were pawned.

The Kurhaus, built in 1824 by architect Friedrich Weinbrenner, where Dostoevsky played roulette, has survived to this day. The casino building resembles the residences of French kings, especially impressive is its interior decoration with white marble, luxurious fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, sculptures, and huge paintings. The gaming hall is located on the right side of the building, while the restaurant is on the left. The casino includes several themed halls, the largest and most luxurious of which, the "Florentine," accommodates a thousand people.
