Tatiana's Day is the day of Russian studenthood, a memorable date in Russia, as well as a day in the Orthodox and folk calendar. The name of the holiday is associated with the early Christian martyr Tatiana of Rome, whose memory is celebrated in the Orthodox Church on January 25.

After Empress Elizabeth Petrovna signed the decree establishing Moscow University in 1755, "Tatiana's Day" began to be celebrated first as the university's birthday and later as a holiday for Russian students.

Later, in one of the wings of the old university building, a house church dedicated to Saint Martyr Tatiana was founded, and she was declared the patroness of all Russian students.

The holiday was officially established in 1850. Initially, it was celebrated only by students of Moscow University, but over time it spread to other educational institutions.

By the mid-19th century, Tatiana's Day transformed from a celebration for students and professors of Moscow University into a holiday for the Russian intelligentsia.

In the Russian Empire, the celebration of Student Day was loud and joyful. Initially, it was celebrated only in Moscow, but practically the whole city participated. The holiday began with a prayer service in the university church, followed by official ceremonies in the university building in the presence of honored guests. Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and his wife Elizabeth Feodorovna attended this event annually until their demise.

After the October Revolution, Tatiana's Day was almost forgotten. However, after the opening of the church in honor of Martyr Tatiana at Moscow University in 1995, the holiday revived. Since 2005, January 25 has been celebrated in Russia as "Day of Russian Studenthood." Congratulations to all Tatianas on their name day!
