The monastery housed three churches: a cold stone church dedicated to the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, a warm stone church with three chapels, the main one in honor of the Sign of the Mother of God, St. Peter of Athos, and St. Barbara the Great Martyr, as well as a wooden house church in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. Initially, the house church was located in the main wooden building of the monastery. In 1908, a new stone sisterhood building with a house church highlighted by a dome was constructed.

After the events of 1917 and during the Soviet era, various organizations were located on the monastery grounds: a shelter for homeless children, a hospital during the war, and in the 1930s, a home for the elderly and disabled. From 1990, it housed a psychiatric nursing home. The Znamensky church was destroyed; it was blown up, and according to eyewitnesses, the bricks were used for paving the road in Kotovsk. The domes were removed from the Iveron church, and the bricks were used for the construction of the Kotovsk Palace of Culture. The church itself became a warehouse. The Kazan house church was converted into a club. The monastery wall was crumbling, and the utilities were deteriorating.

In 2002, after his appointment to the Tambov diocese, Bishop Theodosius blessed the revival of the Sukhotinsky Mother of God-Znamensky Convent. At his initiative, a coordination council for the revival of the monastery was established by the order of the governor of the region, O. I. Betin. In September 2004, council members visited the monastery and adopted a program for its comprehensive restoration. Work was underway to transfer the surviving monastic cell buildings and the refectory building with the house church in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God to the diocese.
