Once, fate brought the Gumilev and Akhmatova family to the Bezhetsk region, which became a significant stage in their lives. Here, on the Bezhetsk land, they were a true Family: a father, a mother, and a son. Each of them left a significant mark on Russian culture and science, following their unique paths.

In the village of Gradnitsy in the Bezhetsk district, there remains a house where Anna Akhmatova and Nikolai Gumilev lived and worked from 1911 to 1917. Akhmatova described the village of Slepnyevo, located 15 versts from Bezhetsk, as an unpicturesque place in her autobiography. It was here that she began to visit after marrying Nikolai Stepanovich Gumilev.

Slepnyevo, located 7 km northeast of Gradnitsy, was the estate of the noble Lvovs. Anna Ivanovna Gumileva (Lvova), Nikolai Gumilev's mother, was a co-owner of the estate. Gumilev came here since 1908, and from 1911 to 1917, his wife, poetess Anna Akhmatova, spent every summer here.

In 1935, a school in Gradnitsy burned down, and the Slepnyevo manor house was dismantled, transported to Gradnitsy, and reassembled to open a school. The village of Slepnyevo became deserted and disappeared in the 1960s. The school in the manor house operated for more than half a century and was moved to a new building in 1987.

The memorial house became vacant, and in June 1989, declared by UNESCO as the year of Akhmatova in honor of her 100th anniversary, a museum exhibition opened in four halls of the mezzanine.

Anna Akhmatova did not immediately like this place. Rural life seemed boring and monotonous to her, and at first, she struggled to adapt to village life, perceiving it as "torture in captivity." However, over time, she fell in love with Slepnyevo and called the Tver land her second homeland.

The house has two floors and several rooms with the decor of that time. Some of Akhmatova's belongings are collected here. In the section dedicated to Nikolai Gumilev, his bright and tragic fate as an outstanding poet of the Silver Age is reflected. On August 3, 1921, he was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, and on August 24, he was executed.

The fate of their son, Lev Nikolaevich, was also complicated: he was convicted three times. The museum is undoubtedly worth a visit, and for fans of Akhmatova and Gumilev, the House of Poets should be a must-see stop on the route through the Bezhetsk region.

Nearby the House of Poets are the ruins of the Trinity Church, built between 1782 and 1804.
