In the early 18th century, wooden chambers of the princes Shcherbatov stood on this site. By the end of the same century, they were acquired by the nobleman Stepan Khomyakov.

After the fire of 1812, the main house of the estate took on a majestic classical appearance. It is believed that in 1824, the architect O. Bove was involved in the development of the site, who also reconstructed Theater Square and the surrounding areas.

The house on Petrovka is connected to the life of Alexei Stepanovich Khomyakov, a well-known Slavophile philosopher, publicist, poet, and mathematician. He was friends with Gogol, who often visited him in 1839. The poet N. Yazykov, whose sister Khomyakov married, also frequently visited.

The first years of Khomyakov's family life with E.M. Yazykova were spent in this house.

On October 24, 1826, a ceremonial dinner was held here in honor of the founding of the magazine "Moscow Herald." The editor M. Pogodin gathered famous poets and philosophers of the early 19th century. The dinner was attended by Pushkin, Baratynsky, Venevitinov, Mickiewicz, Shevyrev, Sobolevsky, and future authors of the magazine.

The Khomyakov children died in infancy. In 1839, A. Khomyakov's sister Anna passed away. Alexei Stepanovich transferred the house to his son-in-law and nephews, who bore the surname Khomyakov.

In the second half of the 19th century, the house ceased to be residential.

The first floor housed an office that dealt with trade transactions and the confectionery of Iosti, which was replaced by the confectioneries of Lyuki and Duble.

There was also a well-known bookstore of I. Glazunov, a rarity and book shop of G. Volkov with the workshop of the jeweler Joseph Fulda, as well as women's fashion stores of Darzans, Raveli, and others.

The upper floors were occupied by cheap furnished rooms "Nice," and later "Toulon," where artists from the Small and Bolshoi theaters lived.

The old house was rebuilt beyond recognition. The colonnades facing Petrovka and Theater Passage were dismantled.

During the recent reconstruction of the Bolshoi Theater, it was decided to restore the historical appearance of the Khomyakov house. The facades of the house were recreated based on 19th-century drawings, and now rehearsal halls of the Bolshoi Theater are located here.
