Andrei Arsenyevich Tarkovsky, an outstanding Russian director, whose films have become an important part of our cultural heritage. His creative journey began in the small Volga town of Yuryevets, which he considered his homeland. In this city, on November 28, 1996, the A. Tarkovsky Museum Center was opened. Its creation was made possible through the joint efforts of the local administration, local historians, the culture and arts committee of the Ivanovo region, the A. Tarkovsky Society, and the Association of Museums of IGOIRM.

The museum is located in a house built in the early 20th century. During the Soviet era and until the museum's opening, this building served as communal housing for several families. Since 1933, two rooms of the house were allocated to N. M. Petrov, Tarkovsky's stepfather. In 2007, to mark the director's 75th anniversary, the museum underwent a re-exposition. In the museum's courtyard, there are two architectural compositions: a well symbolizing the sacred motifs in Tarkovsky's films, and a wall of a ruined church, reminding of the presence of churches in his works and the lost holy places of the 20th century. The museum's exhibition includes four halls: 'The Artist's World', 'Family History', 'Communal Apartment. 1941-1943', 'Communal Kitchen', and 'Anushka's Corner'.

Andrei Tarkovsky was born on April 4, 1932, in the village of Zavrazhye in the Yuryevets district. During the evacuation years from 1941 to 1943, the family lived in Yuryevets with their grandmother, where Andrei began his education. The 'Communal Apartment' hall, recreated based on the memories of the director's sister, M.A. Tarkovskaya, is of particular interest to visitors. In 1943, the family returned to Moscow. In 1951, Andrei graduated from high school, and in 1954, he entered VGIK to study directing.

The museum's exhibitions introduce visitors to photographs taken in Yuryevets and materials filmed during movie shoots. Among the exhibits, one can see original documents, Tarkovsky's student ID, and his autobiography written upon entering VGIK.
