The wing of the estate was built in 1834 and 1857 and belonged to M. E. Motova. Initially, she rented it out, but in 1863 sold it to the family of the Vyatka merchant N. I. Khokryakov, the father of the famous artist. In 1901, the wing passed to the heirs: Nikolai, Natalia, Vera, and Yulia.

According to documents, the building appeared one-story from the street and one-and-a-half stories from the yard. There were wooden structures, a cellar, a barn, and a bathhouse on the territory. By 1908, another wooden wing appeared nearby, which became the artist's workshop. A garden with lilacs, currants, raspberries, and gooseberries was planted around the house, as well as a small apiary.

In the early 20th century, the estate became the center of the city's artistic life. Famous artists visited, such as the Vasnetsov brothers, Viktor and Apollinary, photographer Sergey Lobovikov, painters Arkady Rylov and Ilya Repin, and architect Ivan Charushin. Contemporaries noted that N. N. Khokryakov was a very hospitable host.

Arkady Rylov mentioned that Khokryakov painted in his garden for many years. In the house-estate, he created works such as "Apple Trees Bloom. The Little Garden," "Garden with Phloxes," "Phloxes in Front of the House," and "Yard with Chickens." A birch tree, over a hundred years old, still grows in the garden and is depicted in several of his paintings.

In the 1990s, the main wing was reconstructed: the old building was dismantled, and its "copy" was built, preserving the enfilade layout characteristic of early 19th-century architecture. In 1998, the artist's house-museum opened here.

The workshop wing, where N. N. Khokryakov worked, was lost in September 2014 due to the construction of a new building.

In 2008, Kirov woodcarver G. Ya. Lopatin built a gazebo-rotunda at the estate, and in 2014, he decorated the facade of the house with carvings and created carved gates "Sun" based on a photograph from the early 20th century.

The museum's permanent exhibition includes the artist's works, photographs, and memorial items recreating the atmosphere of the house: antique furniture, a Russian stove, a twisted narrow staircase, and the easel at which the artist worked. Also presented is the "Portrait of N. N. Khokryakov" by his student Alexei Isupov, painted shortly before his departure to Italy.
