The museum was opened in the building where the writer's house used to be. It was in Vyatka that he spent his childhood and youth. The museum began its work in August 1980, although local historians had been preparing for it long before that. The museum staff faced difficulties, as there were no friends or relatives of the writer left in the city, and his personal belongings had not survived. The exhibition is entirely dedicated to the author of "Scarlet Sails."

The museum exhibition occupies four rooms and highlights the creativity and fate of Alexander Grin. In these walls, the writer spent his childhood and youth. The living room and children's room represent the memorial part of the exhibition. The museum staff recreated the environment in which ordinary clerks lived in the early 20th century. Here you can see many items from that time: furniture, books, toys, and much more. Among the most interesting exhibits is the cover of a book bound by the future writer A. S. Grin, the drafting set of his father, S. E. Grinevsky, an accountant at the provincial hospital, as well as authentic photographs of the family.

The third and fourth rooms are dedicated to Grin's literary heritage. Here are presented handwritten works, documents, books, and magazines that reveal the creative process of the famous writer.
