In Moscow, Mikhail Semyonovich Shchepkin changed several addresses. The longest, from 1830 to 1847, he lived in his house on Bolshoy Spassky (now Bolshoy Karetny) Lane. Unfortunately, this cozy two-story mansion was demolished in 1980. The house that Shchepkin rented in the 1850s on Vorotnikovsky Lane has also not survived. The only remaining place of his residence is the house on Shchepkina Street (formerly 3rd Meshchanskaya Street), where he spent the last four years of his life.

This wooden mansion, which survived the fire of 1812, was built from logs without the use of nails. There was a shady garden with birches, lilacs, and raspberry, currant, and gooseberry bushes, creating a village atmosphere. The house was always crowded: a large family lived here, along with students and sometimes random guests attracted by the host's hospitality. Among Shchepkin's friends were the fairy tale collector A. N. Afanasyev and the translator of W. Shakespeare N. K. Ketcher, who lived across the street. The American tragedian A. Olridge visited the house, as well as the young M. V. Lentovsky, who later became a famous actor and entrepreneur.

In April 1863, Shchepkin received a leave of absence with pay and a grant of 500 rubles and went to Crimea to restore his health. However, he never saw either the house on 3rd Meshchanskaya or the Maly Theater, to which he dedicated forty years. On August 11, Shchepkin passed away in Yalta. He was buried in the Church of Philip the Metropolitan on 2nd Meshchanskaya, and his coffin was carried to Pyatnitskoye Cemetery, where he was laid to rest.

Two years after his death, the mansion was rebuilt by new owners, the Panovs. In the late 1990s, the house was restored: the decor from 1865 was destroyed, and the facade was restored in the style of Shchepkin's time.

Today, it houses the M. S. Shchepkin House Museum, which is part of the A. A. Bakhrushin Theater Museum Association in Moscow. The museum hosts creative and musical evenings, meetings with actors from Moscow theaters, and has an active theater troupe.
