The Kurenkov House

Фото 1
The house was built by merchant of the second guild Ivan Yakovlevich Kurenkov, a representative of an ancient Kovrov family, whose history can be traced back to the 17th century. The owners never lived in this house, using it for their trade or renting it out. In 1901, the owner's son, Pyotr Ivanovich Kurenkov, was engaged in the trade of iron and hardware products here, ran a carpentry workshop, and headed the representation of the insurance company 'Russia.' Part of the first floor was rented by the Kovrov Zemstvo for its Free Pharmacy.

In 1906, the building housed a branch of the right-wing political party 'Union of the Russian People.' In 1907, engineer N.S. Nikolsky from the Kovrov railway workshops opened a private real school here, which functioned until 1910. In 1915, the house was sold to a prosperous peasant Ivan Yefimovich Kozhevnikov from the village of Kislyakovo, who owned a tannery and acquired the house for his son. However, the new owners could not live in it: in 1917, political changes occurred in the country. In August 1918, the Bolsheviks confiscated the building for the needs of the Soviet government, placing a hotel for peasants and a cafeteria on the first floor. It became popularly known as the Peasant House or the Collective Farmer's House.

In the late 1980s, with the beginning of perestroika and the revival of private business, the first cooperative cafe in the city opened in the house in 1989. Later, the building became empty and gradually fell into disrepair. At the end of 2012, it was transferred to the operational management of the Kovrov Historical and Memorial Museum.
