The Museum and Local History Center "House of G.S. Batenkov" opened its doors to the first visitors in 2010.

Gavriil Stepanovich Batenkov is known as a hero of the 1812 war and a participant in the foreign campaigns of the Russian army. He was a transportation engineer, involved in the construction of roads and bridges in Siberia, and built the embankment of the Angara River in Irkutsk.

Batenkov was a publicist, poet, philosopher, and a person with encyclopedic knowledge. He served under A.A. Arakcheev and M.M. Speransky, leaving a significant mark on the political and cultural life of Russia. In Kaluga, Batenkov lived for seven years after the amnesty for the Decembrists and his return from Siberian exile.

From 2012 to 2016, the museum exhibition was dedicated to the events of the 1812 war. Since August 24, 2016, a new exhibition has been operating, timed to the 240th anniversary of the Kaluga province, which also features memorial items of Batenkov.

The wooden building, constructed in the first half of the 19th century, was acquired by Batenkov from the landlady Efimova in 1857. He spent the last seven years of his life in this house.

In the 20th century, the building housed communal apartments. Thanks to the efforts of local historians and descendants of Batenkov's pupil, the house was preserved and transferred to the local history museum. During the restoration, the area of the house was increased due to an extension that became part of a multi-story building, occupying the territory of the former Batenkov estate.
