There is a possibility that Smolino appeared as early as the 16th century, but there is no precise data on whether it was a village or a settlement, as documents have not survived. The first mention of Smolino dates back to 1628, when a wooden church with an altar in honor of St. Nicholas is mentioned in the books of the Patriarchal Treasury. It is unknown how long this church stood and why it was abolished. In the 18th century, another wooden church is mentioned, with the main altar in honor of St. Basil the Great and a chapel in the name of Archangel Michael.

After the establishment of Vladimir Province, the village of Smolino became part of Sudogodsky District and belonged to State Councilor Ivan Semyonovich Lyubucheninov and his wife Yekaterina Mikhailovna. Lyubucheninov was the first chairman of the Vladimir Criminal Chamber, and in 1780 he was transferred to Penza, where he became the chairman of the civil court chamber, and two years later was appointed the civil governor of Vyatka. Despite this, he remained the owner of Smolino, owning 337 souls of both sexes in 1782.

Later, the village passed to Lieutenant Lev Alexandrovich Shcherbachev of the Yekaterinoslav Dragoon Regiment, who married the daughter of Lyubucheninov, Alexandra Ivanovna, and received Smolino as a dowry.

On June 6, 1823, the church in Smolino burned down. Church elder Mikhail Lavrentyev and priest Porfiry Vasilyev appealed to Bishop Parthenius Chertkov with a request to allow the construction of a new stone church. The collected funds amounted to 537 rubles, which was insufficient. The remaining expenses were covered by landowner Alexandra Ivanovna Shcherbacheva. A blessing for construction was received, and the elder was issued a collection book to gather the missing funds. The new church was consecrated in honor of the Ascension of Christ with two chapels: one dedicated to Archangel Michael and the other to St. Nicholas.

The churches were long used by the local collective farm and underwent changes until they were abandoned. The Ascension Church is gradually collapsing: the roof has fallen in, the wall paintings have been lost, and the interior is overgrown with grass. Almost nothing remains of the old cemetery, with only granite tombstones occasionally found, which are of interest to local historians.

Recently, it was decided to restore the warm church of Archangel Michael, where services are now held on holidays, and the building is gradually being repaired.

Many parish villages have disappeared. The crystal factories Voznesenskaya and Nechaevskaya with their worker settlements have been renamed Red October and Red Lighthouse, becoming the largest glass factories in the region. The village of Smolino survived during the years of communism thanks to the collective farm established in 1965, the proximity of glass factories, and regular bus service. Today it continues to live a full life, although the smoke of tar-burning stoves and the ringing of bells have long since disappeared.
