The Church-Memorial on the Blood was erected at the site where Emperor Nicholas II, his family, and their loyal companions tragically lost their lives. This place, chosen by Divine Providence, has long been prayed over by our ancestors.

In the 1760s, a wooden church was built here in honor of the Ascension of the Lord. In 1789, parishioners decided to construct a new stone church on the hill where the house of Vasily Tatishchev once stood. The stone church was laid in 1792 and consecrated in 1818, while the wooden church was moved to Nizhne-Isetsk.

On the site of the Old Ascension Church, a residential building was constructed, and later, a stone mansion. A chapel in honor of the prophet Elijah appeared at the site of the altar. The murder of the Emperor and his family took place in the basement of the southern wing of this house, at the site of the former Ascension Church. In 1908, the house was acquired by N. N. Ipatiev. In April 1918, he was asked to vacate the house, which was fenced off and prepared for the arrival of the Royal family.

On April 30, 1918, Emperor Nicholas II, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, and Grand Duchess Maria were brought to Yekaterinburg. In May, the other family members arrived. On July 14, 1918, the last supper was served.

On the night of July 4, 1918, the murder of the Emperor, his family, and their companions: Dr. Botkin, Anna Demidova, Alexei Trupp, and Ivan Kharitonov occurred in the basement of the Ipatiev House.

In 1919, the Ipatiev House became the property of the republic. Over the years, it housed an army headquarters, a dormitory, an archive, and museums. In the 1920s, the chapel of the prophet Elijah was demolished.

During the war, exhibits from the Hermitage were stored in the house. In the 1970s, it housed a Training Center and the agency 'Soyuzpechat'. The house was demolished in 1977.

The first prayer for the Royal family took place in 1989. In 1990, the site was transferred to the Yekaterinburg diocese, and a Royal Cross was erected.

In 1991, a procession was held in memory of the Royal family. In 1992, a chapel in honor of Grand Duchess Elizabeth was built near the site of the Ipatiev House. In 2000, it was included in the Cathedral of New Martyrs.

On September 23, 1992, the foundation of the future church was laid. In 1993, the Synod blessed the construction of the Church-Memorial on the Blood. The first liturgy took place in 1994.

In 2000, the royal passion-bearers were glorified. In 2001, the project for a spiritual center at the church was blessed. In 2003, the Upper Church was consecrated.

On October 12, the relics of Seraphim of Sarov arrived at the church. The church was consecrated one hundred years after his canonization. Olga Kulikovskaya-Romanova presented an icon of the Mother of God, before which the Royal family prayed.

On the night of July 16-17, 2003, a liturgy was held, after which a procession took place to Ganina Yama.

On April 18, 2010, Patriarch Kirill consecrated the lower church. On July 15, 2013, the altar at the site of the murder of the Royal family was consecrated.

On February 7, 2016, Yevgeny Botkin was glorified among the saints.
