Church of All Saints of the Holy Smolensk Zosimova Monastery

Фото 1
The church in the neo-Russian style is located above the northern monastery gates, which were the main ones during the abbess Germana's time. The building is adorned with a cloak roof and towers on the sides. Architect Alexander Afanasevich Latkov, known for his projects in the Russian style, designed this church.

The church is consecrated in honor of All Saints, who are considered close to God as intercessors, protecting the monastery from external threats and serving as examples of patience and humility for its inhabitants. The body of the church and the four side towers are topped with pyramids featuring painted domes and gilded crosses. The central pyramid of the church is four-sided, while the others are eight-sided. The All Saints Church at the gates was consecrated on September 19, 1899, by Archimandrite Pavel Glebov. On the eastern side, funded by Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, a cell part known as the "elderly" building was added. In this building, from 1916 until the closure of the monastery in 1923, the venerable Alexy Zosimovsky Solovyov lived in seclusion. In 1917, Alexy participated in the All-Russian Local Council, where he was elected Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus. It was he who drew the lot with the name Tikhon, the new Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. Notable figures such as Sergei Bulgakov, Pavel Florensky, Metropolitan Makary Nevsky, and others visited him at the monastery. In the last years of his life, the venerable Herman settled in a neighboring cell, where he passed away in 1923.

The external appearance of the church has hardly changed over the past hundred years, which cannot be said about the interior decoration: the carved iconostasis and wall paintings have not survived. Currently, the church has been restored, but its interior remains modest, except for the iconostasis, which has been recreated based on old photographs. In the Church of All Saints, a water blessing service and a night Divine Liturgy are held every last Sunday of the month.
