Ascension Church in Veshki

Фото 1
In the census books of the Vladimir district from 1637-1647, a warm wooden church of the Ascension of Jesus Christ was already mentioned in the village of Veshki. An ancient icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker had the inscription: "In the year 1575, this prayer of the Chudov Monastery was established in the village of Veshki for the Ascension of Christ by the servant of Philip Ivanov, son of Serov."

From 1637 to 1656, the church was rebuilt and consecrated in the name of St. Sergius. In 1831, the wooden church burned down, and the following year, the construction of a stone church began. The refectory was consecrated in 1832, while the main church was consecrated only in 1850. This means that in 2005, it was 155 years since the consecration of the Veshki church. The stone church had two altars: the Ascension of the Lord and the Kazan Mother of God.

Since 1888, a parish school operated in Veshki, where 30 students were educated in 1896. The partially ruined brick school building can still be seen next to the church. According to 99-year-old resident A.V. Kuznetsova, the first Soviet attacks on the church began in 1929. Father Nikolai was arrested and repressed, and his fate remains unknown. In the 1930s, the church was officially closed. The last priest was Pavel Vasilyevich Rebrin, who was buried near the church. The bells were removed with the participation of local resident Vasily Patrogin. Many icons were taken home, although the altar and iconostasis were preserved until the 1960s. A beautiful icon of the Ascension of Christ stood on the eve, where the deceased are commemorated.

After the church was closed, it was turned into a storage facility for the local grocery store, where glass bottles were kept. A heating boiler was installed in the summer church, which caused two fires. The fire damaged the roof, and the rains caused damage to the wall paintings.

In 1962, a lightning strike ignited the cross and dome of the bell tower. At first, this caused curiosity, but when the fire intensified, it was impossible to save the roof.

From 1963, repair workshops for agricultural machinery were placed in the church. Grooves were carved into the walls for beams to create a second floor, but it was not used, which allowed fragments of frescoes to be preserved in the upper part of the church that can be restored.

In 2000, with the blessing of Archbishop Evlogy of Vladimir and Suzdal, restoration work began. The machine-tractor park was moved to the village of Nikulino, the central estate of the former collective farm "Zarya."

Protopriest Alexander Mikheev from the Gusev chapel of St. Barbara was appointed as the rector. A meeting of residents of Veshki and surrounding villages was held in the presence of priests Ivan Kravchenko and Alexander Mikheev. V.V. Perfilova was elected as the church elder. The first donations were made by benefactors and local residents, as well as foresters V. Gorbunov and A. Shishkin. A Muscovite, Rumyantsev, who has a summer house in the village of Davydovo, provided 60 sheets of galvanized iron for the altar roof. The restoration work was actively supported by the Kuznetsov and Karabulov families.

Once, during repairs under the dome, one of the residents fell but survived, as his work was pleasing to God.

In 2001-2002, the dome of the church was renewed and a new cross was installed. In 2002, the parish charter was approved, and the church was registered. The first services after the restoration were conducted by Father Alexander Mikheev. The official date of the church's revival is considered to be September 19, 2002.

Currently, restoration work has been suspended due to the theft of building materials and the absence of a permanent priest. In 2002, robbers broke into the elder's house, causing him bodily harm and stealing church utensils.
