Ascension Church in Kameshkovo

Фото 1
The church was built in 1906 according to the design of architect N.D. Koritsky from the Vladimir diocese. The construction project for the church near the Novki station was reviewed and approved on September 9, 1904, at the Advisory Presence of technicians of the Construction Department of the Vladimir provincial government. To approve the project, coordination with the Moscow-Kursk and Murom railways was required, as the building was planned to be erected near the railway line. In response to the inquiry, the department reported that it saw no obstacles to the construction of the church by the 'Nikanor Derbenev Sons' Manufacturing Society near the right-of-way of the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod railway. After reviewing all documents, the Advisory Presence permitted the construction. The laying of the temple took place in October 1904, and the consecration occurred on November 12, 1906.

The church is built of brick on a cement mortar in a stretcher bond. The foundations are cobblestone, the plinths and walls are brick, and the roof is metal. The building is executed in the 'Russian' style, three-part, of the refectory type, without columns, with an axial layout 'east-west'. In the plan of the church, from east to west, there are a semicircular apse, rectangles of the main volume, and the refectory. The main volume and the refectory connect with the apse, forming parallelepipeds. The main volume is distinguished by width and height. The facades of the main volume are three-axis and symmetrical, while the facades of the refectory are two-axis and symmetrical.

The facades are decorated with wide pilasters, with three half-columns at the upper part of the main volume. All window openings have an arched finish. The window openings of the refectory and apse are adorned with wedge-shaped brick surrounds with half-columns. The windows of the main volume have three-leaf surrounds with 'dryers' and are decorated with four half-columns, separating three window openings. The window sill is adorned with 'dryers'. The multi-profile cornice of the church is decorated with 'dryers' and strips with filling.

Inside the church, the main volume is a column-free space with a quadrangular vault. A wide arched opening connects it with the apse, whose vault is made in the form of a conch. The refectory is also column-free, with a barrel vault.

The temple operated until 1923, after which it was closed by the new authorities and turned first into a club, then at different times housed a store, a savings bank, DOSAAF, and residential premises. The bell tower was destroyed, wall paintings were obliterated, and church utensils were taken away.

On Christmas in 1992, the first service was held in the church after a long break. Since then, the restoration of the church has begun, which continues to this day. The completion of the main volume with domes and roofs, as well as the added bell tower-vestibule, has been completely new.
