Ascension Church (Old) in Zarubino

Фото 1
The Ascension Church in the village of Zarubino was built in 1703. At the end of the 19th century, the wooden bell tower was replaced with a brick one, and a wooden porch connected it to the church. The temple has a traditional "ship" composition with dimensions of 36.0×10.8 m. The walls and vaults are made of wood, and the facades are clad in planks. The cubic base of the church, covered with a four-pitched roof, is topped with five domes. A refectory, equal in width but lower, with a gable roof, adjoins the base from the west. To the east is a five-sided altar apse of the same height as the refectory, under a sloping roof. The facade decor combines elements of Baroque and archaic details characteristic of 17th-century Russian architecture. The church is covered with an eight-section vault with triangular diagonal facets, and the central lantern opens into the interior. The ceilings of the refectory and altar are flat.

The dominant height of the complex is a four-tiered tent bell tower made of red brick, executed in the Russian style, which represents a national variant of eclecticism. The volume of the bell tower consists of two cubic sections and two octagonal sections, decreasing in plan, and topped with an octagonal tent with an onion dome.

The square-plan brick mausoleum from the mid-19th century is made in the spirit of classicism. This small centralized structure is topped with a mushroom-shaped dome with a head on a slender lantern. The facades are adorned with two simplified Tuscan half-columns and finished with a triangular pediment.

The complex, surrounded by a cemetery, is complemented by a fence with gates and wickets made of red brick. The monument stands out in the surrounding flat landscape. The long period of formation of the complex has led to the presence of Baroque, classicism, and Russian style features in the architecture. The Ascension Church, reproducing in wood the image of a stone structure in the spirit of Baroque, holds special scientific and artistic value.

The monument is in an emergency state. The rafter roof of the refectory has collapsed, there are breaches in the walls of the refectory and altar, and the wooden cladding is partially torn off. The architraves of the northern and southern entrances are lost, and the porches are partially destroyed. The windows of the upper tier of the church are boarded up, and the glazing of all windows is lost. The covering of the central dome and vault of the church is partially torn off, and the interior of the church is heavily damaged. The wooden porch connecting the church and the bell tower is completely lost.

The brickwork of the bell tower is in poor condition and has significant damage, posing a risk of collapse. The brick fence, as well as the finishes of the gates and wickets, are partially destroyed. The plaster on the walls of the mausoleum and gates is chipped, and the interior of the mausoleum is lost. Dense thickets of trees and shrubs around the complex hinder its visibility.
