The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Narm

Фото 1
The Church of the Elevation is located on the outskirts of the former village of Narma and is surrounded by a cemetery on two sides. From 1637 to 1648, there stood a wooden church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker with a warm chapel of St. George the Victorious, which was replaced by a new building in 1731. In 1804, a new Nicholas temple was built with a chapel of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, but it was not consecrated in time, as it burned down along with the old church. In 1806, a cold Nicholas church was erected, renovated in 1822, and in 1856, a warm Epiphany temple was built. In 1880, the construction of a stone church began. The main altar was consecrated on September 13, 1988, in honor of the Elevation, and on September 15, the Nicholas chapel. The bell tower was built from 1888 to 1902.

The church is designed in the Russian style. According to local residents, the interior was painted in 1912 by icon painters Ivan and Vasily Matveyevich Lulykhins from the village of Solotcha in the Ryazan province. The oil painting in the academic style has been preserved on the vaults of the altar and the square space, as well as on the western and partially on other walls and columns.

The iconographic composition of the scenes is traditional and based on examples from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as the frescoes of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. On the northern wall of the square space, the "Nativity of the Virgin" is depicted, on the northwest column, "Christ and the Samaritan Woman" after the engraving by G. Dore, as well as "Joseph's Dream" after the engraving by J. Schnorr von Carolsfeld.

The vaults of the altar are separated from the walls by a cornice that repeats the design of the plaster cornice with gilded elements. Here are compositions of the Christological cycle. In the spaces between the windows of the central apse, three scenes from the Passion cycle are presented: "The Last Supper" in the center, "The Agony in the Garden" from the south, and "The Deposition from the Cross." On the walls of the altar of the northern chapel, three scenes from the Virgin cycle are depicted: "The Annunciation" in the center, "The Meeting of Mary and Elizabeth" on the right, and "The Descent of the Holy Spirit" on the left. On the vault of the northern chapel, the Virgin cycle continues with images of "The Assumption of the Mother of God" and "The Protection." The southern chapel features scenes from the life of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, including "Saint Nicholas Receives the Omophorion."

The burial site of Narma with the churches of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and St. George the Passion-Bearer is first mentioned in the land books of Vasily Krapotkin in 1637. The Nicholas temple in Narma was built in 1600. From 1880 to 1888, a new stone church was erected in place of the burned wooden Nicholas church, with chapels in honor of the Elevation of the Holy Cross and St. Nicholas.

The church was closed in 1941, reopened in 1955, but was closed again in 1961.
