According to legend, the wooden church in honor of the Renewal of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in the village of Vorontsovo was built in the 16th century to commemorate the capture of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible. Nearby, a church was erected in honor of Saints Cosmas and Damian. Both of these churches are mentioned in documents from 1674 related to the establishment of tribute. Almost a hundred years later, they were rebuilt in stone.

The first stone church, cold, single-altar, and five-domed, was erected in Vorontsovo in 1698 on the site of the Renewal Church and was named the Resurrection of the Word. At the same time, a stone tent-shaped bell tower was built. The second church, the three-altar Kozmodemyansk, was completed in 1789. Its main altar, consecrated in honor of Saints Cosmas and Damian, was cold, while the warm chapels were consecrated in honor of Saint Dmitry of Rostov and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.

In 1888, the parish of the village had 324 men and 328 women. By 1904, the population had increased to 341 men and 370 women. By the early 20th century, a literacy school opened in the village.

In 1933, the Soviet authorities closed the churches, and grain warehouses were placed in their premises.
