Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Kyrmyzh

Фото 1
The building of the Resurrection Church that we see today was constructed in 1882. It was a large cold temple with three altars, built with the funds of parishioners from Kyrmyzh. According to data from 1912, there were 7,746 people of both genders.

The church had five domes, two chapels, and a bell tower. By the early 20th century, it housed 21 bells: 16 small for ringing, 3 medium-sized, 1 large, and 1 for striking the hours. The name Resurrection Church was given in 1847; before that, it was called Nikolskaya. In 1846, due to the increase in the number of parishioners, the temple was expanded, rebuilt, and renamed.

Looking back to earlier times, the first church on this site was built in 1621 when the village was formed. It was consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. In 1658, with the establishment of the Vyatka Diocese and the inclusion of the Kyrmyzh Archdiocese, the Nikolsky pogost became the center of a large region. In 1731, the Vyatka bishop granted the request of Kyrmyzh priests to build a stone church, and it was completed 9 years later. The new warm temple was consecrated in 1742, and in the following decade, another cold church was built.

From 1775 to 1778, a stone bell tower was erected in place of the old wooden one, likely under the guidance of the famous stonemason Makara Lavrentyevich Zlobin and his crew. The height of the bell tower was 80 meters. The old residents of Kyrmyzh recall the magnificent panorama that opened from this height, harmoniously incorporating the domes of the Kumenskaya and Kstinin churches. This architectural ensemble on the banks of the Bystritsa River existed until the 1840s. In 1846, the warm temple was rebuilt, and in the 1880s, the cold church was dismantled, and a new one was built in its place, the remnants of which we see today.

In the 1930s, the church was closed, and workshops and a club were placed in one of the chapels. The temple could not be completely demolished, but the bell tower was destroyed. A witness to the events of 1935, A. Snigireva, recounted that the bell tower was undermined, supports were placed, and it was set on fire. It collapsed, part fell into the river, and the bell and crosses ended up on the other side.

In the 1940s, grain was stored in the church, and in the following years, it housed a library, a repair workshop, a forge, and other institutions.
