In 1863, a small wooden chapel covered with shingles was built in the village of Shapta in honor of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. According to legend, the chapel appeared after the villager Ivan Kuguzha had a vision of the icon of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. This event prompted him and his family to abandon pagan beliefs and become Christians. Following the advice of his spiritual mentor, Ivan built the chapel at the site of the icon's appearance and placed the found relic inside. The chapel also housed an icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.

On November 1, 1873, the Shapta parish was established. The construction of a single-altar church on a stone foundation began on April 1, 1874, and was completed by the autumn of the same year. The small church was consecrated on November 11, 1874, in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.

Over time, the wooden church deteriorated, and the parish population grew to 1,900 people. In 1882, Priest Alexei Galitsky appealed to Bishop Alexius of Vyatka and Sloboda for permission to raise funds for the construction of a stone church and received a blessing.

The design of the three-altar stone church was completed by the well-known Vyatka provincial architect Ivan Apollonovich Charushin by May 1902. Yakov Shchennikov, a stonework master from the Yaran district, was contracted for the construction and completed it by autumn 1911 "diligently and sufficiently solidly," adhering to the project.

The construction of the church in the small parish took a long time. Donations for its construction were collected throughout the diocese. The architecture of the church resembles the forms of Russian architecture from the 17th century. The interior spaces are covered with brick vaults of various types. The four-tiered iconostasis with carved columns and rich ornamentation combines ancient Russian traditions with Baroque. The wall paintings were done by the artist Ivan Filippovich Seleznev, as confirmed by the inscription on the church wall: "The painting work was carried out in 1928 and completed in 1929. Under the rector Fr. Vasily Bessonov, church elder Vasily Alexandrovich Dubrovine, and chairman of the church council Andrei Efimovich Odintsov, by the master painter Ivan Filippovich Seleznev." The painting is done in the style of the triumph of the New Testament Church.

The consecration of the new stone church and its main altar, dedicated to the Mother of God in honor of the Vladimir Icon, was timed to the 100th anniversary of the Russian army's victory over Napoleon, on January 8, 1913.
