St. Basil's Church in Romny

Фото 1
The Church of St. Basil with its bell tower, whose authorship is unknown, was reconstructed by architect V. Chervinsky. Its construction took place from 1751 to 1780, funded by the Cossack officers of the Lubny regiment: Andriy Pavlovych Poletika, his son Andriy Andriyovych Poletika, and the Lubny regimental scribe Pyotr Lukyanov. The founders of the church belonged to one of the most famous Cossack noble families of the Left Bank during the Hetmanate, which produced a number of outstanding political and cultural figures for Ukraine.

The church is located next to the Holy Spirit Cathedral and serves as its bell tower. After reconstruction, it acquired an elongated shape without a dome, featuring a gable roof that ends with a faceted altar apse, above which rises a small decorative cupola. Above the roof of the western porch stands a low square structure, from which the bell tower rises sharply, consisting of a tall elegant octagon with arched openings. Above it is a smaller octagon without openings, adorned with pointed arches. The bell tower is crowned with a graceful cupola on a high cylindrical drum. The entrance is designed as an arched opening in a massive central risalit on the western facade. The entrance arch is framed by stylized capitals, and above it is a large round window.

The church's decor features various elements of the Russian-Byzantine style, such as keystone finishes of the arches, lace cornices, and columns with "pumpkins." The bell tower, with its lace-like adornments, appears slender and fragile against the powerful cubic volume of the Holy Spirit Cathedral.

St. Basil's Church is the last example of the hall-type temple, which was widespread in Ukraine in the second half of the 17th and early 18th centuries. Despite the reconstructions, it has preserved the main features of its original layout. As a monument of national architectural significance, it has a protective number 1535.

The priest's house adjoins the cathedral's enclosure on the southwest side. Its small size emphasizes the majestic scale of the cathedral. Built in 1876 as a place for selling church candles, the house has a rectangular shape, is one-story, with three rooms and an attached closed porch. The facades lack decoration, with only the corners highlighted by pilasters. Heating is by stove, and the floors are wooden. The ceilings are flat, constructed on wooden beams. The roof is hipped, supported by wooden rafters, and covered with roofing steel.
