The church in the village of Smolensk existed as early as the beginning of the 17th century, but it burned down before 1628. This was the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Barbara the Great Martyr.

In 1779, senator and general-major P.S. Svin'in built a two-story stone temple on this site, connected to the manor house, which made the church a household one.

The temple has two altars: on the upper floor in honor of the Assumption of the Mother of God, and on the lower floor, in the name of the Holy Apostle John the Theologian.

The bell tower was located in a separate tower. The entire complex, including the services and a large park, represents a unique architectural ensemble.

After the revolution, in 1924, this temple was the first in the Pereslavl district to be destroyed. The mosaic floor was covered with boards, and the altar was destroyed. The premises were divided into classrooms for the Uspensky Agricultural Technical School. The frescoes on the walls were painted over. Modern generations were even unaware that a beautiful church once stood here. In these rooms were classrooms, a library, a telephone exchange, a savings bank, and a workshop.

On the Epiphany of 1995, a fire occurred. When firefighters extinguished the flames, they were struck: "Fire, smoke, and before us appear saints, as if alive." In the morning, when everything calmed down, people saw the majestic temple freed from 70 years of shackles.

The villagers and students of the Smolensk school, which has been in this building since 1978, began to clear the church. In 2000, a significant part of the work was carried out by students from service squads of Yaroslavl universities.

Clergy from Nikitsky Monastery helped repair the dome, installed a cross, and began to conduct prayers and sermons for the population and students.

Since the fall of 2001, restoration work in the temple has continued thanks to the financial support of our fellow countryman. New frames have been installed, the walls in the central part have been plastered, and a carver is preparing the covers for the icons. On the walls, where there was whitewashing, miraculous frescoes by Italian masters and an image of Saint Nikita the Stylite have emerged.

There is still much work to be done to restore the temple and the entire complex. The church does not have its own priest, and the lower altar still houses a dining room. But the villagers and everyone who has visited this place at least once strive to restore the church and the entire estate complex.
