The Assumption Church in the village of Romanovo, built of stone along with a bell tower in 1800, was erected with the funds and initiative of the parishioners. It is surrounded by a stone fence, within which lies the parish cemetery. The church has three altars: the main one in honor of the Assumption of the Mother of God, and in the warm part, the right one in honor of Archangel Michael and the left one in honor of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker.

In the 17th century, the village was part of the Kostroma district, Andronikov stan. In 1628, the church "of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Romanovo" is mentioned, belonging to Prince Vasily Turenin. In 1614, a priest named Afanasy Semenov from the village of Romanovo is mentioned. In 1629-1630, the village was recorded as belonging to the chamberlain Prince Vasily Ivanovich Turenin, according to a charter from 1631, as a manor previously owned by the boyar Prince Fyodor Ivanovich Khorastinin. There was a wooden church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos in the village, with church utensils, and priests such as Ofonasey Semenov, deacon Vasya Nechaev, and other servants lived there.

In November 1720, a decree was issued for the construction of a new church at the request of the stableman Alexei Spiridonov, son of Zarina. It was ordered to transfer the dilapidated wooden church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the estate of Peter Nikitin, son of Musin-Pushkin, to the village of Romanovo and to build a new church in its place in the name of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with chapels in honor of Archangel Michael and Nicholas the Wonderworker.
