A copy of the land registry books from 1628-1630 has been preserved in the church archive, indicating that in 1531, Archimandrite Philotheus of the Moscow Simonov Monastery acquired the village of Malo Zagorino by the Yunde River from the Fedotyev brothers. At the time the land registry books were compiled, there was a church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village, which contained icons, books, candles, bells, and other church property. The church grounds included the house of priest Peter Andreev, the houses of the deacon, sexton, and prosphora baker, as well as six cells where the poor lived, supported by the church. The arable land amounted to 10 quarters, and there were 20 haystacks. The village had a monastery yard, 8 peasant households, and 2 empty ones.

In the second half of the 17th century, the church in Malo Zagorino fell into disrepair, as noted in the income books of 1676, which indicated that the parish of the dilapidated church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was attached to the church of Bolshoy Zagorin. Soon, services resumed in the church, and in 1687, icons were donated to the temple.

In 1753, the old church became dilapidated, and with the blessing of Bishop Dmitry of Ryazan, a new wooden church with the same name was built. In 1869, the wooden church burned down, and by 1873, a new stone temple was erected, consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The church was well supplied with utensils, vestments, holy icons, and liturgical books. Among the icons, ancient images of the Savior, the Cyprus Mother of God, and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, donated in 1687 by a townsman from Gorokhovets, Semyon Ershov, have been preserved. The icon of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was especially revered by the parishioners. The church retained the altar Gospel published in 1688 and the festive Menaion, donated by Grand Duchess Maria Alexeyevna to the Simonov Monastery in 1710. Until 1764, Malo Zagorino belonged to this monastery. The church archive preserved a decree from Bishop Dmitry of Ryazan for the consecration of the new wooden church in 1753.

There was no special clergy at the church; services and rituals were conducted by the clergy of the Lipovitsky Pogost, who received about 130 rubles a year for their work. The land associated with the church included 28 desyatinas and 50 sazhen of arable land and 1 desyatina and 2200 sazhen of non-arable land; there was no meadow land.

The parish of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary included only the village of Malo Zagorino, where the clerical records listed 29 households, 117 men, and 116 women.

In the 1930s, Father Sergey Alexeyevich Rozanov served in the village; he was arrested on November 18, 1937, and sentenced for "anti-Soviet agitation." He was executed on December 26, 1937. During this time, the church began to be destroyed and its property looted.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is currently inactive.
