Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Domnino

Фото 1
The church in the village of Domnino is a vivid example of a rural cult complex that has preserved its historical territory and buildings in the classical style. It is located on a hilltop in the center of the village, near the main street, dominating the surrounding landscape. The village of Domnino is known as the ancient estate of the Shestov boyars, which belonged in the 16th century to Vasily Mikhailovich and Ivan Vasilyevich Shestov, and later to their daughter Ksenia Ivanovna Romanova, the mother of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich. In 1631, she transferred the village to the Moscow Novospassky Monastery. At that time, there was a wooden tent church of the Resurrection mentioned in the inventory of 1636, next to which stood a wooden house of the Romanovs. According to tradition, on the site of this house, the stone Church of the Assumption was built between 1809 and 1817. Its chapels of the Tikhvin Mother of God and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker were consecrated in 1818, and the main altar in 1827. The church territory was surrounded by a stone fence with gates and a small hexagonal tower at the northeast corner, which was used as a shop.

The old wooden church was dismantled due to dilapidation in 1831. In 1850, by the order of Nicholas I, 2785 rubles were allocated for the church's renovation. In the same year, wall paintings were completed in the church, and in 1856, the main iconostasis was updated, and new chapel iconostases were installed. It is likely that during this period, the church watchman's lodge was built. The church shop was dismantled in the 20th century. During repair and restoration work in the 21st century, the fence posts, gates, and watchman's lodge were plastered, and the lodge was rebuilt. Instead of the dismantled storage room in the western part, new walls of silicate brick were laid, and a thick layer of plaster concealed the wedge-shaped window lintels. Instead of the wooden picket fence connecting the posts, metal grilles were installed. All the buildings of the complex are made of brick, and the church is whitewashed with a layer of lime plaster. The church territory has the shape of an irregular polygon, with the Church of the Assumption at its center. To the northwest of it are the gates, and west of them, the watchman's lodge along the northern line of the fence.

The Church of the Assumption, built between 1810 and 1817, belongs to the common type of pillarless five-domed churches in the region, whose decor is characteristic of provincial classicism. The volumetric composition of the church is symmetrical relative to the longitudinal axis. The two-light square of the church is topped with five scaly bulbous domes with thin necks raised on faceted drums, with the central one being lighted. The narrower rectangular altar has rounded eastern corners, recessed into the main walls' corbels. The refectory with chapels, which have altar roundings with small domes, is of equal height to the altar and significantly wider than the square. To the west, it is adjoined by a closed porch, stretched in width, connecting the refectory with a three-tiered bell tower. It consists of squares that decrease in area towards the top and is topped with a high spire on a quadrangular platform, placed above a 'blown' roof with lucarnes.
