Church of the Three Saints in Saransk

The Church of the Three Saints, dedicated to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, occupies an important place in the lower part of the city, beyond the urban outskirts. Built with funds from the residents of the Translated Sloboda, it combined elements of ancient Russian churches, baroque, and classicism. Today, there is no trace of classicism left, but baroque features, though distorted by extensions, are still noticeable. The cold church, erected in 1761, housed the main shrine, the icon of the Kazan Mother of God. The warm chapel was dedicated to the three saints: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. The church also had small altars in honor of Simeon the Hospitable and Anna the Prophetess, and on the second tier of the bell tower was the Paraskeva-Friday chapel. The construction was carried out in stages: first, the cold church was built, then the refectory and bell tower, and it was completed in 1765. For a long time, a house belonging to the voivode Kamienitsky stood next to the church, where Emelyan Pugachev once visited. Although the house itself was dismantled at the end of the last century, the stone granary, which belonged to merchant Kubantsev before the revolution, has survived. Legend connects this 'granary' with Pugachev, and it is still called Pugachev's tent.

The church was closed in 1935, later than many others in the city. The dome and bell tower were demolished, and the building was handed over to the local history museum, which moved here from the Vladimir church of the Petropavlovsky monastery, which was to be demolished. Over time, the museum expanded, and the extensions concealed the architectural features of the church. The octagon played an important role, allowing additional light and creating an effect of height. It was almost equal in diameter to the square base, so the church can be called three-light. The architects found a solution for placing a small dome on the wide octagon, finishing it with an almost conical covering. This gave the dome a helmet-like shape, creating the illusion of a dome. Without this solution, a huge drum would have to be installed, significantly increasing the height of the building. The curve of the dome logically continued in the covering of the dome. The church is not distinguished by an abundance of decor, but the frames, portals, and cornices are made massively from shaped bricks. The frames of the second light stand out especially, whose three-lobed tops intersect the lower decorative belt of the cornice, giving the facade a festive appearance. Another feature is the unusual design of the refectory, located across the main line, from north to south. The base of the bell tower is also unusual, rectangular in plan, which gives the church the appearance of a cross from above. The windows of the refectory are decorated in the same way as those of the church itself.

The Church of the Three Saints was a spiritual center for craftsmen, plow soldiers, and working people. The Translated Sloboda was densely populated, and in winter a lot of space was needed for gatherings and services. In 2008, on the 90th anniversary of the local history museum, the authorities announced the allocation of funds for the construction of a new museum building, and the vacated building is planned to be returned to the Saransk and Mordovian diocese.
