Since the mid-18th century, the village of Maly Sundyr was the center of a large church parish. In 1754, the first warm wooden church in honor of the Life-Giving Trinity was built here, and in 1764, a second, cold church was erected in honor of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos. The funds for the construction were provided by the parishioners, and the initiator was Archimandrite Samuel from the Cheboksary Men's Monastery.

When the wooden buildings became dilapidated, in 1829, with the funds from the parishioners, a warm two-altar stone church was built in honor of the Holy Trinity, with an altar dedicated to the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos. The church looked magnificent: marble columns at the entrance, sparkling domes, snow-white walls, a fence made of red brick and iron lace, and a tall bell tower with many bells. The interior decoration was no less luxurious, and the main iconostasis was considered one of the best in the Kozmodemyansk district.

The church in the village of Maly Sundyr functioned for almost two centuries, from 1754 to 1940. During the Soviet years, like many other churches, it was closed. In the 1990s, the church could not be revived due to the construction of the Cheboksary Hydroelectric Power Station. The village of Maly Sundyr, along with neighboring villages, ended up in the flood zone, and its residents were resettled, while the buildings were demolished.

The church remained, but the icons disappeared, and the bells were taken away. By the decree of the Council of Ministers dated August 27, 1965, the church was ordered to be destroyed, and the materials were to be used for the construction of facilities for the collective farm 'Sila.' Before the restoration began, only the leaning bell tower and a small part of the main building remained, standing next to the cemetery in the deserted village.

In 2003, the restoration of the church began. The work was taken on by the parish of the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles from the neighboring village of Usola under the guidance of the rector, Priest Alexander Malinov. Gradually, the masonry was renewed, the altar was restored, the dome was raised, and a cross was installed. The roof was redone, and windows were inserted. The restoration of the bell tower is currently ongoing.

By the blessing of the Bishop, services have begun in the restoring church. Today, the Holy Trinity stone church stands alone, as the villages of Maly Sundyr and neighboring settlements no longer exist. Nevertheless, the church is alive, and prayers once again resound under its renewed arches.
