Trinity Church in Karaule

The oldest structure of the Chicheryn estate in Karaule is the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1806. This brick church, consisting of winter and summer parts, was designed by the Italian architect Giacomo Trombara, who was specially invited from the capital. Trombara is known as the author of several projects for the country residences of the Russian nobility. For the construction of the Trinity Church in Karaule, he chose the highest point of the area on a cliff above the Vorona River.

The Church of the Holy Trinity, with an altar dedicated to the Protection of the Holy Virgin, was built on the principle of a ship, including the main temple, refectory, and bell tower. The entrance portals on the southern and northern facades are adorned with colonnades, while an apse adjoins the western side. The main entrance to the church passed through the bell tower, which was connected to the winter temple and summer church, refectory. The interior of the church was decorated with multicolored stained glass, and the walls were painted with biblical scenes.

In 1906, the church underwent a major reconstruction, during which the main dome was painted by the famous Russian artist Vasnetsov.

For a long time, the Karaule Trinity Church served as a parish church for nearby villages and as the family church of the Chicheryn family. Church sacraments were held here for many family members, including the baptism of Boris Nikolaevich Chicheryn and his nephew Georgy Vasilyevich Chicheryn. Many of their relatives were also married and buried here. Before the revolution, a cemetery and the family necropolis of the Chicheryns were located around the church, which was plundered and destroyed in the 1920s and 1930s. Currently, enthusiasts have restored two gravestones with the names of Chicheryn family members.

During the struggle against religion, the church in Karaule was turned into a grain storage facility for the local collective farm. A large breach was made in the wall for the entry of tractors with grain. Over time, much of the roof collapsed, the plaster peeled off, and the interior painting and decorative elements were lost. The church turned into ruins. However, despite the destruction, the temple retained its main structural elements. The semi-spherical brick vault of the roof above the altar still stands, one can climb to the upper tier of the bell tower, and original ceramic tiles from the imperial factory lie on the floor. In the best-preserved part of the church, local residents have set up an improvised prayer room. They cleared the debris, hung icons, set up a table with candles, and now services are occasionally held here. Next to the church, among the weeds, the remains of the house of former church servants can be seen, where teachers of the Karaule school lived during the Soviet years.
