In 1743, Nefyod Nikitich Kudryavtsev built the first church in Akshuata. According to locals, it was later sold to Zarechnoye. This church had two altars: in honor of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God and John the Merciful. By the early 20th century, it had fallen into disrepair, and the village owner V.N. Polivanov decided to build a new one. The log cabin for it was made right in the forest, and the construction took several years, resulting in two churches temporarily standing side by side in Akshuata.

In the early 20th century, Bishop Guriy visited the village, and his report mentions that there were two wooden churches in Akshuata: the old, two-story one, and the new one, which had not yet been consecrated due to the lack of an iconostasis and window grilles. The old church was in a neglected state, with dirty walls and sagging cardboard sheets. The floor in the altar was unstable, and the altar table was shaking.

The bishop noted the painting "The Appearance of Mary Magdalene" by Professor Khudyakov, a former serf of the Polivanovs, as well as the icon of the Unmade Savior, also painted by him. During the consecration of the water, dissonant and loud singing was heard from the choir, as some parishioners were intoxicated. The priest explained this by saying that drunkenness was a common vice among the parishioners. Bishop Guriy, in his address to them, pointed out the poverty and dilapidation of the church and urged them to avoid drunkenness, which leads to material and spiritual decline.

Clerics were buried in the churchyard. In the early 1960s, when the church was already closed and used as a grain warehouse, a horse fell into one of the crypts, where the remains of a cleric and several items were found, which were later taken to the school. In the late 1950s, the church was used as a collective farm barn, and a weighing station was built in front of it. Inside the church, it was so dusty that the icons and paintings on the walls and dome were barely visible.

In 1968, the church was demolished. Eyewitnesses reported that it was attempted to be toppled by tractors, but ultimately it was dismantled piece by piece. Later, a store was built on this site. It is said that after the church's destruction, the icons were used as bridges over the river, and some locals hid the holy images.

Now, a new church is being built in the village thanks to the initiative of a group of pensioners, supported by the head of the MO "Baryshsky District" S.V. Kochetkov. He helped demolish the old store building that stood on the site of the church. In the summer of 2013, the rector of the recovering church, Archpriest Alexey Yesin, consecrated the territory for the new church.
