St. John of Shanghai Church in Colchester

Фото 1
St. John of Shanghai Church in Colchester is a significant historical site. Within its walls, English soldiers were blessed before being sent to the Crimean War (1853-1856) against Russia. The church functioned for a long time, but in March 2007, it was decided to close it.

In May 2008, one of the parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia acquired this vacant Anglican church. It is now the only representation of the Russian Orthodox Church in East Anglia. A unique feature of St. John of Shanghai Church is the regular services for deceased Orthodox soldiers and all innocent victims. Residents and visitors can request prayer commemorations by writing to the church or visiting it in person.

In recent years, work has begun to improve the church's appearance. Funds for this are provided by both the Russian Orthodox Church and parishioners who leave donations. The church is regularly visited by pilgrims and those interested in the history of Orthodoxy in the UK. The museum at the church features interesting historical artifacts.
