The village of Velyki Sorochyntsi is located in the valley of the Psel River, 25 kilometers from the city of Mirhorod, which is the district center. The name of the village is associated with a legend about a male monastery founded by Father Daniil Apostol, where 40 monks lived. After the monastery was destroyed by enemies and the monks perished, the locals named the settlement Sorokchentsy in their honor. In official documents, it has been mentioned as Sorochyntsi since the 20s of the 17th century. Another name used was Krasnopil. Only in the mid-19th century did the current name, Velyki Sorochyntsi, become established.

In 1648, the Sorochynska Hundred of the Mirhorod Regiment was created, and in the early 18th century, the regiment's command was located here under Colonel Daniil Apostol. The town was surrounded by an earthen rampart with wooden towers on the bastions. In 1709, Sorochyntsi withstood an assault by Swedish troops. The Spaso-Preobrazhenska Church was built in 1728-1734 by Hetman of Left-Bank Ukraine Daniil Apostol and became his burial place. The church was consecrated by Metropolitan of Kyiv Raphael.

Initially, the stone church had nine domes, but after a fire in 1811, only five were restored. The architect of the temple was Stepan Kovnir, who also worked in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Stonemasons came from Poltava and Opishnia, the carving of the iconostasis was done by masters from Hlukhiv and Hadyach, and the icons were painted by artists from the Myrhorod school of Borovykivskyi and hieromonk Alipiy from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The construction involved hetman Cossacks, of whom there were many in Sorochyntsi. The remains of Hetman Daniil Apostol, his wife Iuliana, and four children rest in a tomb under the church, but all passages there are now filled in. On March 20, 1809, Nikolai Gogol was baptized in this church.

In 1955, the Spaso-Preobrazhenska Church was closed, and it was returned to the believers only in December 1989. A few years later, the first repairs were carried out: the walls were whitewashed and the domes painted. In 1996, seven copper bells were acquired, and a 15-meter bell tower was built. In 1999, thanks to sponsors, major external repairs began, including the renewal of the foundation, roof, and windows. The main donors were the descendant of Daniil Apostol, Christopher Apostol-Muravyev, and Vitaliy Petrusevich from Crimea, who was baptized in this church.
