Church of the Transfiguration in Yegoriy-Kholm

Фото 1
An example of a large brick parish church in the style of provincial classicism in the Soligalichsky district is the temple complex in the village of Kholm. In the past, this village was the center of the Kholm volost, which explains the presence of two stone churches here, surrounded by a stone fence. In 1773, landowner I.G. Bartenyev built the Annunciation Church, a small single-domed temple, in the architecture of which elements of provincial baroque and archaic features of the 17th century are combined. The church was often called Georgievskaya after one of its altars. In 1844, a large cold church of the Transfiguration was built next to the Annunciation Church, with chapels of Nicholas the Wonderworker and Sergius of Radonezh. Today, only a hill of broken bricks with wall fragments up to two meters high remains from the warm church.

From the original composition of the Transfiguration Church, the main volume of the type "octagon on a two-light square" has been preserved, reflecting the local interpretation of the late classicist style. The temple was topped with a five-domed octagon with narrow diagonal faces, decorated with massive two-column porticos of the Tuscan order and triple Italian windows. Similar architectural solutions can be found in several cult buildings in the Soligalichsky district, erected in the first half of the 19th century. The side domes of the five-domed structure, preserved above the diagonal faces of the octagon, are placed on low square pedestals. The square, previously decorated with four-column porticos, is illuminated by high arched windows of the first light and small square openings of the second, located along three axes.

In the interior, the octagon was covered with an eight-support closed vault. The transition from the square to the octagon was achieved using pendentives. The temple was connected to the apse by three arched passages, and to the refectory, by one wide opening. From the original interior decoration, plaster cornices with modillions and rosettes, located above the pendentives and at the base of the octagon's vault, have been preserved.
